In this "demonstration," is it for the benefit of the child or to a third party? If what you're asking is, "How do I show a child that I am indeed listening to them?" the answer must be not only given, but explained. Everything you do to or with a child is a lesson. You are not only explaining your actions to a child, you are teaching them how to treat other people. If you are teaching the child how to listen, first tell them, "What you are saying is important to me." Make eye contact with them and try, if possible to sit or squat so that you are eye to eye, not talking (certainly not shouting) "down to them." Do not 'multi-task.' Put down what you're doing and give them your undivided attention and listen. Truly listen. Do not interrupt. Save your questions and comments until they are completely finished, even if they fumble a little while trying to find that right word. You will have your change to respond when they are done. You are showing them that they are important, giving them the space to assemble their thoughts (remember, they are relatively new to, well, everything) and you are conditioning them to respect others who are speaking. This does not mean that you back down on established boundaries like 8:30 bedtimes or no cake for breakfast. We're just talking about letting children know that they are People in Training and that you take them seriously, even if you outrank them. After your exchange, say something like. "Anything else? You okay? That was good. I'm glad we could do this."

How to support a child or young person to end relationships that are making them unhappy?

Listen! You may not like what you hear, but offer some solution you may have had when you were a young child. Don't pressure the child or young person because you will only force them further into the unhappy relationships. There is a lot of peer pressure for young people these days and it can start even in elementary schools and the last thing a young person needs is more stress to deal with. Often children are put on the back burner regarding their problems because an adult may find that particular child immature; stubborn; having all the answers or simply not listening and they can be all of those things so step lightly and just listen and tell them a story about your own young life that may be similar to theirs. If they persist on not listening then they will have to learn the hard way and that is part of life with all of us when growing up.

Explain to them calmly what you are feeling. And ask them only a few questions to start out. Questions like " why are you still with them" " do u want to be with them" what makes you unhappy in the relationship". And when they explain what is going on, you can give them advice on what to say to the other partner. And they won't take it hard. Just make sure everyone in the picture is calm when it happens
