There really was a lot of "poor" colonists. The lower class was the black slaves and the poor English colonists. Then, the middle class was merchants who created products to sell to those of the highest class. The highest class owned much land and many slaves, but they weren't used to working.
If you are asking about Jamestown it wasn't a party. People were sick, they were starving, they were in a swampy hostile place with mosquitoes and bad water. Plus, they had a Spanish spy ( this was just recently discovered at the site). Daily life was trying to stay alive. As time went on it got better but because of the introduction of tobacco.
life was tuff there because the british armie ruled and people were not allowed to leave there house without permission.
