Hawaii was not bought. It was more like stolen. What amounted to a conspiracy/coup was brought about by several American businessmen arguably led by Sanford Dole (of Dole pineapple fame) with the support of the US Military. An interm government was established followed by anexation by the US. Britain and other countries had their eyes on taking over Hawaii for themselves. Little known is that there still are a number native Hawaiians that honor the current heir to the thrown and feel it should be given back to them.

∙ 13y agoThe US Government was not in the market for Hawaii when the Monarchy was overthrown. It had a lease for a Naval Base and Coaling Station, which was highly desireable. The Monarchy was in the way of profits and they had to go in the minds of a small number of American businessmen.

It was a revolt sponsored by a small group of wealthy American businessmen, supported by the paramilitary Honolulu Rifles under the control of the Missionary Party (Later the Reform Party and then the Republican Party), and the Committee of Safety. It was aided in its efforts by the US Minister to Hawaii.
