President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while Lincoln was watching a play with his wife Mary. He died on April 15, 1865, just 5 weeks into his second term.
Booth, an actor by profession, was sympathetic to the South, and although the Civil War was essentially over, conspired with others to kill Lincoln and other high federal officials. They may have thought to influence Union policies (although the Congress was even more radical by 1865) or sought revenge for the destruction within the Confederacy.
Even prior to being elected as President, Abraham Lincoln had always included an "anti-slavery" or an opposition to slavery view, in his campaigns. Once elected President, the Confederate States attempted to secede from the Union, or the United States.
Between 1861-1865, Lincoln was elected President of the US, twice. During this same period, the Civil War took place, and Lincoln stood firm on defending the Union. He also suspended the writ of habeas corpus, which led to over 13,000 arrests during a 2 year period. The Emancipation Proclamation, not only helped to end slavery, it forced the Southern States into a position, which eventually led to the Confederate's surrender. The second part of the Emancipation Proclamation legally accepted Blacks into the military. He also endorsed the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery.
On April 9, 1865, Lee (the General leading the South) surrendered to Grant (the General leading the Union.). Many feared that Lincoln's plans for the South, and the Reconstruction of the Union, would have devastating affects on those who were prominent in leading the Southern states, in the Civil War. Also, Lincoln's part in abolishing Slavery, and the actions he took regarding suspending the writ of habeas corpus, and the Emancipation Proclamation, made many in the South furious.
John Wilkes Booth was a Southern sympathizer who with about 8 others, planned to kidnap the President. These plans were never recognized. When Wilkes Booth heard of Lee's surrender to the Union, he was adamant about killing the President. He believed somehow, that assassinating Lincoln, would allow the South to return to battle, and therefore, reverse decisions regarding slavery. This was not only incorrect but far fetched and unrealistic in thought.
Thus, Wilkes Booth was not the only one angry enough to kill the President for the decisions he'd made but Wilkes Booth was radical enough to attempt and succeed in assassinating the President.
