in the United States GMO foods are not labeled. Some foods that do not contain GMOs are voluntarily labeled, often with the Non GMO Project label. Due to cross contamination, even foods with the Non GMO Project label may not be totally free of GMOs. Foods in the UK that contain GMOs are labeled.

∙ 9y agoThe benefits would be for the consumers, who would know what foods have transgenic (GMO) ingredients instead of having to guess. It would allow consumers to make informed choices about what foods they eat.

∙ 9y agoThe main reason GMO foods should be labeled is because consumers want them to be labeled, and they should have the right to know what they are consuming. Unfortunately, labeling would not have the same impact that it would have back in 1996 when GMO crops started being grown commercially. The reason being that GMOs are so widespread, at least in corn, soy, canola, papaya, and cotton that almost any product that contains them has at least a small percentage of GMOs, and labeling probably would allow for that, even if labeled "GMO-free." That includes organically grown varieties that could be pollinated by GMO varieties as they are being grown. The Non-GMO Project already allows products they label as "Non-GMO" to have a certain percentage of GMOs in them.

∙ 13y agoYes, they must be labelled because it is not known whether they are safe. Therefore when they are labelled people can choose whether or not to buy GM-contaminated foods.

There are no states as of August 2014 that require mandatory labeling for GMO foods. Vermont passed a law to require labeling, but it is being challenged. Other states have attempted to pass labeling requirements, but they have been defeated, even though a large percentage of consumers favor labeling.
