Alpine glaciers, even though they move, are confined to mountain valleys, which in most instances had previously been a stream valley. Continental ice sheets exist on a much larger scale. These huge masses flow out in all directions from one or more centers of the land. They cover the entire continent, hence the name, and extend out toward the sea. Only two exist today: Greenland and Antarctica.

A contonental glacier gives the land a smoother appearance by eroding higher points on the land and filling in lower areas with the eroded material whereas the alpine glacier give mountains rugged, triangular peaks called horns.

By definition, continental ice sheets must cover at least 50,000 km2. Alpine valley glaciers are obviously considerably smaller than this, only typically covering one part of an individual mountain.

It's notable though that many discrete glaciers have been defined and studied which are part of a larger ice sheet, so they're not completely mutually exclusive.

They difference between them is where there flow. Continental glaciers are enormous ice sheets, and are found in Greenland and Antarctica. Alpine glaciers form in mountain valleys.

What kind of glaciers are Antarctica and Alpine?

Antarctica is a continental glacier. Alpine glaciers are a different type of glacier.

How are glaciers different from alpine glaciers?

They difference between them is where there flow. Continental glaciers are enormous ice sheets, and are found in Greenland and Antarctica. Alpine glaciers form in mountain valleys.

What the 2 most common kinds of glaciers?

There are 2 main types of glaciers, Continental is one, they float away from central regions. The second is alpine or valley which are the glaciers that flow down the valley from the mountain.

What is the difference between alpine and continental glaciers?

what is the difference between alpine and continental glacires?

Why do Continental glaciers smooth the landscape?

Continental glaciers smooth the landscape because continental glaciers are flat unlike the rough shapes of Alpine glaciers.

Why do continental glaciers smooth the landscape and alpine glaciers create ragged landscape?

I only know that alpine glaciers can carve deep u-shaped valleys in the mountains.

What are the to differences between alpine glaciers and continental glaciers?

One is bigger than the other one

How do you describe the landscape made by alpine glaciers compared to the landscape by continental glaciers?

Alpine glaciers leave behind U-shaped valleys, deep, high-altitude lakes and cliffs. Continental glaciers flow outwards scraping the landscape clean, making fairly flat lands and lakes

Why continental glaciers smooth the landscape and alpine glaciers create a rugged landscape?

beacause alpine glaciers are bad for the enviromental energy called phleux that makes chemicals interact with each other smoothing the landscape

What are two kinds of glaciers and how are they different?

The two different glaciers are valley and continental glaciers and they are different because continental glaciers are the largest, and valley glaciers are on the top of mountain peaks.

Explain why continental glaciers smooth the landscape and alpine glaciers create a rugged landscape?

beacause alpine glaciers are bad for the enviromental energy called phleux that makes chemicals interact with each other smoothing the landscape
