Census takers are hired by the U.S. Government, prior to the census taking. They are trained in how do do this, for a few weeks(I believe) , then go door to door, and ask questions from the papers they are given, and fill them out accordingly. The questions are usually, How many people live in this household? How many are adults? How many children? How many fulltime residents live here? How many part time residents live here? How many are enrolled in school?(College, grade school, ect). How many work fulltime? Who is the head of household? How many male or female? Is the address we have accurate? I believe they do ask what race are the residents(but I cannot say if you have to anser or not, same with religion)

The U.S. Census Bureau mails a census questionnaire to every residential address in the country during the winter of every year that is evenly divisible by 10. The form must be filled out based on resident information that is true on the 1st of April of the same year. After allowing enough time for all of the forms to be returned, census workers go to every residence that did not return their form to get the information in person. If they get no response, they keep returning often, they talk with neighbors about the residents of the residence, and whatever else it takes to get the required information. At the same time, other teams of census workers endeavor to make accurate counts of the country's homeless populations. When the data collection is completed, they use it to recalculate each state's representation in the U.S. House of Representatives. That information must be communicated to all of the states by the end of January of the following year.

Every ten years a form is sent out for people to fill out and answer questions. There are also people who will interview people personally. The information gained from a census is important because it will determine population of a state and this can affect the number of representatives in the house and federal funding to states. One reason the number of representatives is important this is also the number of delegates in a primary election for the state.
