The link between hepatitis being spread and drug use is in drugs that are injected intravenously. In order to contract hepatitis, you have to get somebody's blood who is infected with a strain of hepatitis virus into your eyes or blood stream. Hepatitis can be caused by other things and be only temporary. Hepatitis comes from the Greek hepat- (liver) and -itis (inflamation). The hepatitis associated by drug use is of the hepatitis causing viruses.

The reason it is most seen with drug users is because addicts will often share needles with other addicts. One addict infected with hepatitis causing virus could share the needle with five other people just in one group usage. These five people go on to share needles with other users, thus infecting them.

What obstacles do reseachers face for hepatitis?

The biggest obstacle for researchers who study hepatitis is the risk of acquiring the disease. For example, if they are studying a blood sample, they must wear gloves and mask and not have open cuts on their skin. They must also work with "live" germs so the risk of contracting the disease they are studying is increased. A third obstacle is that hepatitis has many different causes. For example, the way they conduct research may need to be different if studying how IV drug users contract the disease, vs. a patient who contracted hepatitis after being in the hospital and having surgery.
