i think that cp

some cd players use magnets to hold the cd in the "spinner".

when you insert a cd the drawer goes in and a mechanism drops the magnetic ring down (or pushes up the cd) and it grabs the part below the cd basically clamping/sandwiching it in the spinner.

CD players have a couple of uses for electromagnets. These magnets are used for tracking mechanism that moves the lens across the cd and in the relay switch that turns on the player.
