When geologists are out in the field they us topographical maps to plot where they are and mark on them the rock types and the orientation of any beading or contacts that they can see at that location.

As topographical maps are contain topographic (3D) information, back at the laboratory, gerontologists can use this information and their observations to construct a 3D picture of how the rocks form the landscape over which they walked by construction geological sections.

In other words, using topographic maps enables geologists to "see" beneath the surface.
