When the Sun, Earth & Moon are in alignment with one another spring tides occur. Spring tides are higher than average.

When the Sun - Earth line is at right angles to the Earth - Moon line, we see "neap" tides, which are lower than average.

Tides are created by the tidal forces largely from the moon.

Daily high tides are created by the rotation of the Earth with respect to the Moon. When the Moon is either above or directly on the other side of the Earth from the ocean, there is a high tide. Hence, there are two high tides and two low tides a day.

Larger patterns occur when we take into account the Sun and the Moon, known as spring tides and neap tides.

Lunar tides occur due to the moon's gravity, during its orbit of the earth. Though not as widely known, the sun also creates a solar tidal effect as the earth spins, approximately one-third as powerful as the moon's tidal effect. During most of the month, these two randomly overlap. However, during the new moon and full moon (when the moon is roughly behind the earth or when the moon is between the sun and earth, and the three are aligned at 180 degrees), these two tidal effects overlap, and their effects are synchronized, causing higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides.

These are known as 'Spring Tides.' There are also 'Neap' tides during the quarter moons, when the sun's gravity pulls the tides at a 90-degree angle to the moon's tides, partially canceling out the moon's tides. This causes lower than usual high tides and higher than usual low tides.
