Heredity was the fashion of how monarchies selected rulers. So called royal families would govern a nation. In some cases the families evolved into more than that. They, as in France, became dynasties. Few Monarchies exist in the modern world. The Vatican, as some will say is a monarchy but as the leaders are not based on family the Vatican is not a monarchy.

REPUBLIC

Res Publica is Latin for a public affair

A republic is a modern form of government, that is an elected body that is in practice united in house as a representative democracy wherein a concerted congressional fashion the members make rules and vote on issues that serve to move the state of the nation into the best possible future

I am not aware of a ruler just a gang of collective decisions being democratically addressed .

In a presidential form of republic the electoral college chooses the executive, but that is dangerously close to a monarchy. As I understand it, in America: when the nation goes into the state of war I believe the president becomes the commander in chief, He rules

The monarch is usually chosen through the method of dynastic succession that is established in the monarchy.

Depending on the type of constitution underlying the monarchy, power may be vested in a Prime Minister who is usually appointed by the monarch from the political party that has received the most seats in the elected parliament.

An absolute monarch inherits power from the prior monarch, usually by a previously-existing order of succession law. For example, in Saudi Arabia, succession passes to the next oldest brother after the monarch dies and if there is no other brother, to the oldest son or nephew. In other cases, succession passes necessarily to the eldest child.

There is no election or other contest to determine who an absolute monarch will be. If two different individuals believe that they are the proper inheritors of an absolute monarchy, a conflict between the two pretenders will take place. This conflict could be as simple as a coup d'etat and arrest of one of the pretenders or a full-blown civil war.
