There are many types of diseases and many ways to treat the same disease. None of the following types of physicians can treat every illness on earth. Some people have had bad experiences with one type of doctor and get fearful of going to that kind of physician again. The truth is: there are quacks in every field of medicine. You may choose alternative medicine for thirty years and then develop an appendicitis or blockage in your coronary arteries or have a grand mal seizure...hopefully, you will know that your best, first option is an MD. There are NDs who will talk you out of surgical intervention for appendicitis...some patients who swear they were cured of an appendicitis with homeopathy...may not have had appendicitis to begin with...and they do not realize there was no proof of appendicitis.

TYPES of PHYSICIANS:

1) A Medical Doctor (MD) treats disease with surgery, radiation and/or pharmaceuticals. Massage, physical and lymph drainage therapies are also employed by MDs. It all depends on the type of condition or disease the patient has.

2) Chiropractors (DC) treat with manipulation of the spine, also called spinal adjustments, and various adjunct therapies such as ultrasound, electric stimulation for pain and nutritional support.

3) Naturopaths (NDs) utilize, nutritional, physical, herbal, acupuncture and homeopathic modalities.

A lot of diseases are self-limiting...meaning they will resolve on their own eventually, without any treatment.

In the last decade, some MDs, DCs and NDs are venturing into an area previously reserved for neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons. They use various electrical traction devices which relieve the pressure on the vertebrae. There are conflicting reports as to safety and efficacy and it is this author's opinion that serious adverse events are not being reported to the FDA. Most of the "less than satisfactory results" may be due to lack of diagnostic tests to prove the patient is eligible for traction. If MRI's and X-rays are not performed, the physician has no way of knowing whether there is an underlying pathology. For example, if you have spinal compression, you may end up paralyzed or have a seizure after treatment with these machines. Most people survive this treatment but there is good reason for skepticism. If the spinal problem is new and not due to serious trauma, you will probably benefit and not sustain permanent damage. A person with osteoporosis could end up with broken bones.

There is a place for all types of healers in our world. It is also our responsibility to be informed. MDs are more legally bound to inform patients of risks and benefits than Naturopaths and Chiropractors. A general rule is: if it sounds too good to be true, your leg is probably being pulled and the more desperate you are, the more easily your leg can be pulled. Ask questions, ask to see proof. If the only proof you receive is a testimonial...somebody is saying the treatment worked for them...then you should keep searching for a therapy with the least amount of risks.
