The planets all formed from disk of material that surrounded the sun when as it formed. Most of the material in this disk was composed of hydrogen, helium, and ices of water, ammonia, and methane. The solar wind of the young sun swept most of these lighter, more volatile materials out of the inner part of the disk, leaving behind the small portion of the material that was mostly rock. The gas was not swept from the outer solar system, so there was much more material for the outer planets to gather.

The inner planets are made of rock. The outer planets are mostly gas. The outer planets have bigger gravitational pulls while the inner planets have weaker ones. The inner planets are warmer and the outer planets are colder.

Meteors are not planets. They are tiny pieces of dust or dirt or ice, or small rocks that enter the Earth's atmosphere and start to burn enabling us to see them.

-- We call a planet 'inner' if it spends most of the time closer to the sun

than most asteroids. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are inner.

-- We call a planet 'outer' if it spends most of the time farther from the sun

than most asteroids. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are outer.

Rings are mostly ice, dust, and astroids. The inner planets stronger sunlight sublimes the ice and the solar wind sweeps the dust out of orbit. Comets dont show much 'tail' out by Jupiter because the tail is all ice and dust.

  • Well, Mercury is the only planet with a notable eccentric orbit.
  • Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System (It is not Mercury because even though Venus is farther away its thick atmosphere of Carbon Dioxide keeps a lot of heat in)
  • Mars is the red planet because of the rust that is there. Also believed to have volcanic activity and possibly water on Mars
  • And Earth is the only planet that we know of that sustains human life. It is a solid planet but is 70% water.
  • Ceres, even being just a Dwarf Planet is believed to have water ices in its interior but we won't find out until the Dawn spacecraft visits in 2015.

There are four inner, or terestrial, planets of which Earth is the largest, but only slightly. Venus is nearly the same size while Mars and Mercury are quite a bit smaller.

Jupiter is almost 11 times the size of Earth and Saturn about 9; Uranus and Neptune are both 4 times Earth-size.

Remember that mass varies with the CUBE of the size, so mightly Jupiter is 318 times as massively as Earth. Earth, however, is the DENSEST planet, since it has a big iron core.

The terms inner planet and outer planet are only used for planets. Pluto is not in that category, so the term doesn't apply. But when was considered a planet, it was in the outer planet group.
