Viruses are not living organisms. They do not fit the current scientific description of a living organism.

Against

Viruses are not living organisms because:

  • They are incapable of synthesising proteins without a host cell
  • They cannot replicate their genetic information without a host cell
  • Viruses and prions have more in common than viruses and cells do. Prions are not alive
  • They do not respire or feed
  • They are not able to move themselves
  • They can't communicate with each other or sense their environment
  • Our current definition of life does not support viruses as living organisms.

For
  • They contain their own, unique proteins and the genetic information necessary to produce them
  • They do produce proteins and replicate themselves when provided with the necessary machinery by a host cell
  • One could also argue that bacteria or even animals are simply replicating collections of molecules and therefore aren't alive either
  • Our current definition of life is incorrect.

In short, viruses are blueprints just like DNA. They contain information that can lead to its replication, but need help to get there, and as such aren't alive. They are simply a collection of molecules that seem to be life-like when they are mixed with a host cell.

Viruses are ambiguous, they are something like living organisms and something like toxic chemicals. On the whole, the predominant opinion is that they are living.

How could a multicellular organism use lysosomes as a defense against viruses like AIDS?

The multicellular organisms can use the lysosomes as a defense against viruses like AIDS by killing the viruses and bacteria that causes the opportunistic infections.

What classifications of viruses can change its own code to avoid detection?

Polymorphic

What is the largest cell number in viruses?

viruses are unicellular organisms

Are viruses nonliving?

Active (non-killed) viruses are living organisms.

How do viruses and cellular organisms differ?

Viruses are not classified as living, while cellular organisms are. Viruses are essentially a protein case with mRNA inside. Cells are far more complicated.

it is called polymorphic virus

What are the differances viruses and bacteria?

viruses are non living and bacteria are living organisms

Why scientist believe that virus are not living organisms?

viruses do not grow, and viruses do not respond to changes in their environment. Therefore, viruses are not living organisms. All living things reproduce, but Viruses need living cells to reproduce because Viruses cannot reproduce by themselves.

What are 'prokaryotic organisms' What are some examples?

Bacteria and viruses are examples of prokaryotic organisms.

Why viruses are difficult to classify as living organisms?

It is because viruses are not made up of cells

Is it true that viruses have complex membranes that control what moves in and out of their cells?

Viruses do not have complex membranes like eukaryotic organisms have. Viruses also do not have cells, nor are they technically living organisms. There is no need for viruses to control the movement of material in and out of the viral particles.
