they were huge, deep and wide ranging, creating new landscape as far south as New York. When they receded they left the thousands of shallow lakes in northern US and Canada. They ground mountains into little pebbles and pushed rocks thousands of miles from their origins

hope this helps!

The largest Glacier presently is the Lambert Glacier - appx. 80Km. wide, 500Km. long.

If the theory of the big freeze (that at one time the Entire Earth was frozen) then the answer is "as big as the planet".

Even if it's not, we know for sure that glaciers once covered all of North America down to well below New York City (and Europe to France as well as Asia into China).

supplement And check out Beardmore glacier in wikipedia.org, where there is an authoritative article

Well, soon after the algae invented photosynthesis, that sucked most of the CO2 and methane from the atmosphere. This also put up the O2 content of the air (for the magic of photosynthesis is that plants may split water into O2 and H, which they used to build complex molecules.) And allowed the iron dissolved in the oceans to precipitate out as iron oxides, the 'banded iron deposits' of commercial importance in US, Europe, Aus and so on. Maybe the oil was made then?? And the Earth went into a 'snowball earth' phase, when it was all one glacier. But the volcanoes still put out CO2 and methane, and the ice melted eventually. Which is considered a GOOD THING. Look up the Siderian period in wikipedia.org for some speculations on this. Have Fun.
