up to 4 inches in the northwest

-It varies. Some are small, about an inch or so like in my backyard or the flower-dwelling types, and some can get big like the 4 inches mentioned above. I think some can even get a foot long, though I'm not sure.

Baby praying mantis' are called nymphs. Mantis nymphs are very tiny, and usually can't be seen out in nature because they are so small and unnoticeable.

That depends on the species. Most mantids are in the range of 1-3", but some can get as big as 6". The males are generally smaller than the females.
