Hermit Crabs molt. When they molt they dig under the sand and stay their for about two weeks or so. When they come up they are bigger but they shed their exoskeleton in order to get bigger.

hermit crabs can move pretty fast, but they can also be very slow if a hermit crab is on a table be careful he could scamper away
