How can I convert A.C supply into D.C. supply?
There are two methods of doing it
- Ac motor to DC generator coupling
You couple the axis of a AC motor with the axis of DC generator. So the AC motor generates torque and rotates the axis of DC generator which generates DC power.
The other method is use of rectifiers. There are two types of rectifiers half wave and full wave. Full wave rectifiers are more effecient but you cant control the output. To get a controlled output use AC-DC converter.
A transformer is a device to convert high voltage AC to low voltage AC & vice-versa. It works on the principle of induction. Since induction occurs only in an AC supply, a transformer cannot work on DC.. So, it is not possible to convert DC supply to AC using transformer. You would need an inverter to convert DC to AC.
AC supply commonly used in all over world because AC is available easy. Ac equipments and appliances available on cheap price and easy to fault finding like AC motors having only stator winding. AC can easily convert in DC supply by using rectifier circuits . DC is probably difficult to convert in AC supply . thereby AC is popular rather then DC.
