There are many ways to keep mice from eating wiring under a car hood. You could coat the wires with tape for example.
I guess my ? to you is what kind of car are you dealing with. most of the time you can fallow the wires from the back side of the fire wall to the the addapter under the hood.
Some cars can be unlocked from under the hood if the center console for the central locking has its wires in the hood. The unlock wires are usually have a (-ve) current and that means that if you hook one switch wire up to chassis earthing wire and the other to the unlock wire it can unlock all the doors.

There are probably dozens of black and white wires under the hood. It is a normal color for a ground wire. It is under the fuse box cover which is under hood, on driver's side. It's the box with all the wires going to it! It is under the fuse box cover. the fuse box is under the hood on the driver's side just above and to the side of the battery. It's the black box with all the wires going to it.
I have a 99 wrangler and have had problems with the wires shorting out or corroding under the box. I had to remove the box and replace some wires, the fuses in the box did not blow.
The negative wire is the one with this symbol on the battery. (-) Positive is (+)

Check the wires pretty much everywhere under the hood. The fuses for the engine are under the hood anyway, not under dash. Make sure wire going to starter isn't burnt through. Good Luck!!
