Sorry to tell you the bad news! I is an Interference engine!
You can tell if your window regulator is broken on a Volkswagen Beetle when you hear a big clunk as it goes down.
Front plug
On an interference engine it can cause severe engine damage. On a non-interference engine the engine may not start or run incorrectly.
If the engine is an interference engine and the belt breaks you can almost be certain that there is damage. If it is not an interference engine there will be no damage. I could tell you if you had listed the make, model, year, and engine size.
cAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND THE HEADLIGHT FUSES FOR A 1998 NEW BEETLE I found a diagram here: http://www.somewhereville.com/blogimages/New_Beetle_Fuse_Card_large_10April2009.jpg
How can you tell it's an interference engine or If it's a non-interference engine, or if your valves are in the right place when the belt snaps? Also how can I remove the crank shaft pully?
the volkswagen beetle used to be used by hitler to make people buy certain items when u bought a select amount of that item you were supposed to be able to receive a free car the volkswagen beetle. The name volkswagen in germany at the time meant the folks wagon (the folks car). Nobody ever received one. Now it is an entry level car from volkswagen and can be very fast if you get i with a VR6 in it. My 2005, 4 cyl. twin turbo diesel beetle gets 55 mpg if im in town or on the highway.
Look through this table http://www.aa1car.com/library/timing_belts_interference_engines.htm
Well...I wouldn't restore your 1959 VW Beetle, that's your job. And the process is long and tedious. There is a book, "How to Restore a Volkswagen Beetle," that will tell you how to do it. The most important thing to know is, restore the body last. Do the engine, transmission, brakes and suspension first--all the ugly, greasy, rust-ridden and hidden parts that make the car reliable and safe to drive. Then do the pretty stuff.
At the lever or at the brakes? The Bently Manual for your year will tell all. I have a couple of Supers so not sure if they are the same.
ACCORDING TO THE CHILTON MANUAL YES. EDIT: According to the manuals and parts description, they say these are interference engines. The SOHC versions are not interference while the rarer DOHC versions are interference engines. Since they are not aware of what engine you are working on, they would rather be safe and tell you it is an interference engine. I would have destroyed at least two of these engines if they were interference. I have changed timing belts and been off a few teeth at first.
