How can I tell when my 350 GM 1998 EFI is timed at 10 deg before TDI it has only a line on balancer and V notch on timing gear cover no othe marks or lines?

The timing is not adjustable, It is controlled by the computer.
Most of the time if the timing is off are not right it will turn the check engine light on. Then you will have to get a OBD2 engine scanner and go into the timing mode to adjust the timing and then the light will go off. If service engine light is not on then the timing is right. Thanks, I have lossened the clamp and previously rotated the dist., how can I get it located where it should be? Then I will lock down and let the computer do its thing, I have heard that an INDUCTION T.L. can not be used, and I need an ADVANCE T.L.? Thanks, Fred Hello Fred, You might get lucky by moving it yourself, If you look at the distributor were the clamp goes you should see a clean spot were the clamp was before you moved it just put it back there. If the engine light is on or comes on then you will need a OBD2 scanner to set the timing like I said the first time. Good Luck. NEUTZ

buy a timing light. clip it to the #1 plug wire. loosen the bolt on the distibutor. Unplug the timing advance. start the engine Point it to the harmonic balancer and turn the distributer until the timing mark on the timing cover lines up with the mark on the harmonic balancer. Tighten the distibutor bolt. plug in the timing advance.

The second is a line on the harmonic balancer. When using a timing light, the line on the balancer will line up with one of the numbered lines on the pad. They are marked at 2 degree increments before and after top dead center. Most 350 Chevy engines have an initial timing of between 4 and 8 degrees before top dead center. Given, timing is to be set with the vacuum advance hose disconnected, and at a specific RPM for each individual engine. When in doubt, look up the specs in the manual.

There are three marks to line up... before you remove the lower timing belt cover there are the marks on the little gauge that is integrated into the cover that line up with a mark on the main crankshaft pulley (to actually time it while the engine is running) there are also marks on the camshaft sprocket (big sprocket at the top of the engine seen with the upper timing cover removed), that lines up with a white mark on the upper rear plastic timing cover. on my 85 2.0L there are timing marks inside the timing belt cover. take the round rubber plug out and you'll see 2 mks-bump the starter til the mark on the sprocket in there lines up between those marks. Do this only if you believe the truck is way out of time and you need to line it up with top dead center.....Now...if you are using a timing lite to time the thing,,,,,you can easily see the timing bracket on the lower portion of the timing belt cover....the timing mark on the front balancer pulley is only a small notch on my 2.0.
