If it is sessile (does not move, not motile), it can be mistaken to be nonliving.

If the living thing is in deep hibernation, or is in an inactive form, such as a spore, then it could easily be mistaken for a nonliving thing.

Fungi and moss are the two most would recall. Someleafless trees also appear to be nonliving despite being alive.
