A redox reaction is one in which electrons are being transferred from one compound to another. One species will give up electrons, and the other will receive electrons. The oxidation number of two or more atoms will change. The oxidation state of the species involved will change in redox reaction. For instance, a metal (neutral, or with an oxidation state of 0) will be converted into an ion (with a positive charge, or oxidation state ≥+1) by losing electrons. Or an ion may be converted back into a neutral compound. Sometimes it is clear that the oxidation number of an atom has changed from the way the reaction is written, and sometimes you need to look carefully at the state of each atom in a compound to see if there has been a change in oxidation state.

Acid-base reactions and red-ox reactions are two types of reactions. The first one do neutralization (in fact an acid and a base together form water) and the red-ox reactions deal with electrons.
