An amplifier generally amplifies an AC waveform (such as sound), and is powered by a DC source. The majority of the power at the output is then coming from a DC source (the power supply in a power amplifier will convert the 50/60Hz AC power in to DC for the amplifier circuitry). So you can make the argument the above (question) is a true statement.

But an amplifier wouldn't be used to convert from DC to AC power (in general).

Yes, but only if you already have the stronger current. A transistor is basically a switch which is activated by an electric current. AC (Alternating Current) can be amplified by using it to "switch" the transistor on and off, while applying DC (Direct Current) to the transistor. DC could be amplified as well, but you need a stronger current which will be switched off going into the transistor.

It burns out!

If it is designed to run on 12 V dc and is fed 110v Ac or 220 V Ac... Then It gets too much voltage and burns out.

Alternatively if AC voltage is in the safe input range (lets say 12V ac) then if the power circuit has protective diodes then it will get a dc at 50/60 Hz on/off. Which means a LOT of noise and the device may not work as expected.

If no diodes then it will receive reverse polarity which in most cases is not good (burns out components).

An amplifier needs a dc supply to allow the circuit to operate. A dc signal applied to the input will be blocked by the input capacitor, which is always included to prevent damage to the amplifier.

By using a half wave or a FULL wave rectifier. The full wave rectifier achieves a smoother DC signal than the half-wave. Using filters to smooth the signal, pure DC can be achieved.

no ac amplifier can not amplify the dc signals because dc signal is a constant value signal and it does consist positive and negative cycle and also capacitor blocks dc signal.
