Very simply put, cold air is denser than warm air - thus as air of differing temperature passes over you (or rather your barometer) the barometric pressure will change.

The arrival of warm air will cause the barometric pressure to fall and as warm air holds more moisture than cold air a falling barometric pressure will herald the arrival of rain.

Conversely, if the pressure rises this will indicate some nice sunny days to come

Further, if the pressure falls (or rises) fast, then there are likely to be strong winds.

Air pressure depends on temperature, air at a high temperature has a low density and therefore low pressure and vice versa for cold air. When a change in pressure is detected then there must be a change in temperature meaning there is a weather front moving in. Therefor predicting the weather hour's ahead of time without getting a direct measurement of temperature in a single location air pressure gets the average temp for a whole region.

Due to the Coriolis Effect, low and high pressure systems move wind and weather throughout the Earth. High Pressure systems spin clockwise and typically bring in clear skies, while Low pressure systems spin counter-clockwise and bring stormy weather.

There are 2 types of pressure systems, the high pressure system and the low pressure system.

The low pressure allows for cloud formation, you won't always have clouds associated with a low pressure system, most of the time you will. This system brings storms most of the time. However, you won't always get storms from a low pressure system, you can get them by lake-effect. Lake-Effect storms will only form over large bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes in the US. Depending on the temperature of the lake, it can either strengthen or weaken the storms. Low pressure systems are always associated with stronger storms like Tornadoes and Hurricanes!

The high pressure system doesn't allow for cloud formation, which would bring you great weather.
