I have worked in HR for many years. I will try to give you the best answer I can by listing ways.

Staffing individuals to meet the strategic goals. If the goal is to sell XXXX to make $XXXX in revenue, that will not be met without the human capital. If a company is based off technology or any other specialty, HR must find talented individuals to meet the needs of the company. Need to always look at this strategicly and see what human capital will be needed to push the company into the future.

Training and developing individuals to have the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to meet the strategic goals. Whether the training is internal or external, HR needs to make sure employees can perform what is needed. What knowledge, skills, and abilities will be needed 5, 10, 15 years from now? How do we make sure employees are getting those skills?

Compensation and Benefits can lead a company down a rough patch if they are not handled in the best possible way. The US Automakers gave too many benefits to their workers in the past and are now suffering. Money used in this area can hurt a company from taking it away from being used in other key strategic areas. Making sure compensation and benefits is competative is important to making sure you are attracting and retaining the workforce you need.

Worklife is another imprortant area. Is the company being competative with worklife programs? This links into the strategy because as a whole the business must have a balance. You need to make sure employees are working hard enough to make the strategy, without wearing out. You also can't be behind the competition or employees will leave to go support your competitors strategy.

I could go on and on about different ways HR can help support the strategic goals. If a company isn't utilizing HR in a strategic way, they will not be completely successful! Some of the greatest business leaders believe in the power of HR as a strategic partner. Warren Buffet, arguble the greatest leader of our time, in his book "Winning" talks about the importance of HR on the business.

Hope this helps!

"A happy worker is a productive worker!"

Have you never heard that old adage? That is basically what HR is SUPPOSED to do, thing is, in the corporate world the HR department, and the HR people are easily the most hated. The HR department, is basically a given corporate office floor's babysitter; there are a lot of immature adults out there, who, just don't know how to be professional or be respectful of other people. I would be inclined to agree, immaturity has its place; in entertainment (anime), in being playful (humor), basically, in a social context with friends but NOT at work!

Differences between human resources and strategic human resources?

Human resources typically refers to the people who work within an organization. While businesses carefully monitor their non-human resources (equipment, supplies, machinery, furniture, etc...) they rarely assess the value of their "human" resources - the skills, abilities, potential, and weaknesses of their staff. Strategic human resources is the process of assessing your people's skills, and creating a game plan to train, mentor and develop them so they can be used the most effectively towards the success of the company.
