It is really hard to make insulating materials charged.

There is very large gap between conducting band and a valence band.

It would require a lot of energy to make electrons jump from the valence band and go into conducting band.

Well, (and please correct me if im wrong) insulators arent supposed to be charged with electricity, since the are used to cut of the electric charge. But static electricity may charge it, like when you rub a baloon on your hair (if you have any. Dad, im looking at you) your hair is charged and sticks to the baloon. Maybe that helps, though to my friend it sounds like a load of "caca" for those who are too young to read that kind of language. (For those who can say that, its $***)

Insulators are the bodies that lack mobile electrons and hence they do not conduct electricity. They cannot hold the charges and hence they cannot be charged.

How can materials become electrically charged?

Material can become electrically charged when two different material are brought into close contact, some of the electrons move from one material to another.

Why are insulating materials not allowed in an operating room?

Insulating materials tend to be friable - able to be crumbled to dust by hand pressure alone. You do not want dust from such materials falling into open incisions. In addition, insulating material sent do be porous and thus difficult or impossible to clean to the level of disinfection required by an operating room.

Why copper rod is covered with insulating material in Searle's apparatus?

Copper rod is covered by insulating materials, because copper is good conductor of electricity when we touch copper rod we get shock and insulators are bad conductor of electricity hence copper rod is covered by insulating materials

What materials did you use as an insulator?

For insulating a current you can use plastic/rubber.
