I believe contour plowing is used to control localized flooding and water over-concentration. This prevents erosion and also allows water to seep deeply into the soil, thus keeping it moist longer and preventing it from drying up and blowing away.

Well, you could cover every rock in the world with Styrofoam, perhaps? Perhaps there is another alternative. The answer is that it can never be fully prevented: so long as a rock is exposed to the elements, it will undergo weathering.

We can, however, limit the effects. We could fill in cracks in rocks so that they don't undergo freeze-thaw weathering, or treat them in some way to deter animals and plants. We are not, however, concerned with weathering as we have got over the fact that it is unstoppable.

Perhaps you have confused weathering and erosion? Here are the definitions:

  • Weathering is the wearing away of rocks in situ
  • Erosion is the wearing and taking away of rocks

Humans are very concerned with erosion. It is every government's concern to keep its inhabitants land and property safe, but this is difficult when the coastline is receding constantly. To prevent/delay coastal erosion, governments impose sea defences. A good case study of this is Leasowe, in the North-West of England, where an enormous sea wall has been built. Defences include wave breakers, walls and erratic boulders to break up the force of the wave.

Mass movement is related to erosion, and this consists of a large slice of land moving downhill due to gravity, often along a bedding plane. To prevent mass movement, earthquakes are monitored, and the land is anchored in place to the best of the local authority's ability. This may be using fences, wire mesh, anchors, ditches and walls.

Rivers erode laterally in their lower and middle courses, resulting in the movement of a meander. For a farmer to maintain his pastoral farmland on the floodplain, he must ensure that the meander remains in his plot, so that his grass is always hydrated and fertile when the river floods. To secure the meander, the farmer will likely reinforce the outside bank, potentially even with concrete, and ensure that there is no blockage at any point upstream.

If you are still reading, I would also like to inform you that there are even more ways in which both weathering and erosion can be prevented.

Chemical weathering is very brutal on old mother earth, a horrible few are Acid rains, most acid rains are from fossil fuels, Sulfuric Acid rain is the deadliest it is caused by the number one power source on the earth burning coal, or Carbon acid rain which is caused by car exhaust.

There is no way to prevent biological weathering. This is because it is a natural internal process that is carried out by animals.
