There is the aesthetic answer of preserving interesting forms of life. They may play an important role in their ecosystem (controlling the deer population), but this answer seems weak, given their low number and the fact that part of their decline is due to the decline of prey species.
Another interesting answer might be that it would serve as an exercise testing different strategies of balancing the human development in the region and the preservation of affected life forms. It would be good to see what works in striking this balance.
