∙ 9y agoYou first establish an account at a brokerage, which is like a checking account at a bank but it's only used to hold money you're going to use in investing at that company. In the US, many brokerages require you to deposit $1000 to open an account, but it can be higher - Fidelity demands a minimum of $2500.
After you have an account, you make sure you have enough money to buy the stock and pay the fees, then put in a Buy Order for the shares you want. These can be very simple - "buy 100 shares of Acme," which will cause your broker to enter the order immediately. Or it can be more complex - "buy 100 shares of Acme at 25" (assuming it's not $25/share when you enter the order) will cause the broker's computer to not execute the trade until it finds 100 shares of Acme someone's willing to sell for $25 per share.
