In Romans chapter 10 verse 17 one can read that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Nowhere can you read that one can pray their soul saved. In all exampels shown it The Bible you can read what was told for one to do. The Old Law was nailed to the cross and is no longer in effect, (Colossians 2:14) Then you can read in places like Acts chapter 8 verse 30 where Philip ask the Ethiopian "Do you understand what you are reading". He was starting to understand some about Christ. In Acts chapter 2 verse 38 we are told to "repent" or turn away from our old ways of life. We are to confess Christ, Romans 10 verse 9. And be baptized into Christ,Acts chapter 2 verse 38, Mark 16 verse 16, 1 Peter 3 verse 21. This is the begining of the new life of a Christian. One is then added to the church according to Acts 2 verse 47. These are just a few examples shown in the bible.

Ask your church leader if you are confused.

  • Well, I wouldn't ask "how do you know your a christian?" because it's not completely being a christian that will get you to heaven, or being a christian that you want, because then that would end up being more like a religion which wouldn't be too heartfelt. Religion, in an example, would be like getting up, brushing your teeth, and eating breakfast every morning for the rest of your life. Over and over again. It's a prepetual thing. Like religion. In religion's, you might say the same prayer every night before eating dinner, read the bible the same time every day, and go to church or a bible study. Sometimes, that's not really heartfelt. So instead of calling it "being a christian", you could say," How do I know if I am a follower of Christ?", or "How do I know if I have a relationship with God?". Two very simple questions if you think about it. If you want to know, pray. Seek God, and learn. Study. Don't do it so you can go tell all your "christian" friends. Do it so that you gain salvation, and for the glory of God himself. You will know when you have a relationship with God. You will know if you are a christian or not. It's the same as asking, "How do I know if I have a relationship with my sister?". It's simple. If you do, you do. If you have a relationship with your sister, you might call her, email her, write her, meet up with her for coffee, ect. You would KNOW, because you would know that person. If you know you have a relationship with God, you would know HIM. What are his charactoristics? What is he like? Who is he? Who is he related to? If you would like to know who God is, I suggest looking for it in the bible.

There is no way to actually tell if someone is a certain religion. The only way to tell is to ask, or to watch their culture and what they do. If someone is a true christian, you will see it in the fruits of their lives. People will fail and christians will too, but you should be able to tell a believer from a non-believer.

OpinionFirst, you have to decide what you believe a true Christian to be, and this is not as easy as it sounds. Is a true Christian someone who believes in Jesus and is constantly aware of Jesus' presence? Or is a true Christian someone who attempts to live by the highest moral and ethical standards? Or someone who sets lower standards for himself or herself, but prays for forgiveness? Is a true Christian someone who talks about Jesus and tries to spread the gospel? Is a true Christian someone who disdains hypocrisy in all its forms and tries to be a true friend to those in need? Is a true Christian someone who is tolerant and forgiving towards others, even to the point of turning the other cheek and perhaps even allowing others to enjoy the rewards of iniquity?

Only when you decide which one or more of these you really believe to describe a true Christian can you begin to work towards being a true Christian.

You become a Christian by acknowledging that Christ is the son of God and through His death, grace took place over the law. Since then, by His grace we were forgiven and accepted to live with Him in heaven. From that moment, you become a Christ follower, a Christian;

You need to admit that you are a sinner and the perfect will of God to humanity was broken by the moment the sin entered the world through the man's sin of disobedience. This sin caused all man-kind to have a dead spirit and a stone heart; we became mortals, limited, we gave legality to evil and the whole nature became victms of this fall. Therefore, repentance is required in order to the connection with the father can be restored and only through Christ, you receive a new heart and a live spirit, Ezequiel 36:26.

A simple prayer can confirm you as a Christian, does not matter where you are, or what time, if you have witness or if you are alone. The prayer goes more or less like this:

Dear Father,

I thank you because you made me and everything else around me. Sorry for taking so long to make this decision. I'm aware that the sin that came to the world through man-kind made of me a sinner, apart from you and today I have a hard heart, a dead spirit and I do not have a place in your kingdom. I come to repentance, I confess...please forgive all my sins. Write my name in the book of life, give me a new spirit and a new heart so I can become a new being in Christ, your son, who gave his life for my sins. In Jesus name I pray, Amem. After that you should buy a Bible and find a church which I am sure they will guide you from there.

A great question. In modern Christianity, many people point to the time they prayed for salvation as a marker for the moment they started being a Christian. This prayer is a prayer in which a person will talk to God and say that they believe in Jesus as God's son, they realize that He sacrificed Himself in order to give them a way to be considered "clean" from their sins and that the person praying believes in Jesus as their savior and accepts His forgiveness of their sin. Because it gives people a thing they can "point to" as a starting point of their relationship with Jesus, it has been a popular idea in Christianity for many years. This prayer is sometimes called the "Sinner's Prayer" or sometimes people just call it "accepting Christ" or "receiving salvation", but this prayer is not explicitly in the Bible. In other words, there's no place in the gospels where Jesus says "In order to be saved you need to pray this prayer." It's just a prayer that sums up what Jesus said about Himself and what the disciples felt about Him.

There's nothign wrong with saying this rpayer, becuase it really does sum up all the ideas that a person must accept if they are going to agree with what Jesus preached and did. However, since he prayer is not in the Bible, how can a person really know they're "covered" by Jesus' salvation?

Sometimes people get very caught up worrying about how to "tell" if they're saved. Sometimes, people get obsessed with "doing good things" that they think will prove they're truly saved by God, and they end up stuck doing these things over and over because they're worried that if they don't do enough "good deeds" they won't know they're saved.

There's a great verse I like that really shows us that this is not the way that God wants us to feel, and it is is John 6:25-29 where some men come to Jesus and they ask Him very plainly "What must we do to do the works God requires?" They were basically feeling that same way: they wanted to make sure that they knew exactly what Jesus thought the "work of God" was. They wanted to make sure they did the right actions to be seen as righteous before God, but Jesus doesn't reply that they have to act good or stop sinning or sacrifice something. Jesus just says "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." It's really a very beautiful way to sum up the Christian faith: Jesus just asks us first, before we get caught up trying to "do" anything good for God that we believe in the "one God sent," and, of course, Jesus is the one God sent. He is saying that, if you believe in Him as being truly sent from God and being the way to God, then you know that you're a Christian.

Though we will have doubts and questions from time to time, it is important to remember that they best way to "know" if we are a Christian or not is to ask whether or not we will be willing to say to Jesus "I believe in what you claimed, I believe you're the Son of God." This means a person can't be "born" into being Christian, and they aren't automatically a Christian because their parents are or because they go to a church on Sundays. Jesus asks for us to acknowledge Him personally. Just look at the story of Peter, who swore he would go to prison for Jesus and then, because he was afraid, denied he even knew who Jesus was on the same day that he had just sworn never to leave Jesus! Despite this, when Jesus appears after His resurrection, Peter literally throws himself off of a boat and starts swimming just to reach Jesus faster and Jesus does not say "Get away from me! You denied me and I don't want anything to do with you," but He accepts Peter. This proves to us that we can have doubts, but it is the willingness in our hearts to accept Jesus in the first place that is important (Luke 22:31-4;John 21:7-20).

If people have doubts about this sometimes or they have questions, it does not mean that they can't be or are not a Christian. A person saying "I believe in the things you said and did" to Jesus and then having doubts or struggles with faith is not the same as being an "unbeliever." This is different from someone who says "You know what, I just can't bring myself to say I believe in Jesus," or "I want to believe some of the things Jesus says, but the stuff about Him dying to save me or about being God I just can't accept." I would say, if it makes a person feel better, there is absolutely nothing wrong with deciding to pray to Jesus and say the things I mentioned above (if that's what the person is ready to believe) because it will help to be able to point back and say "I remember the day I prayed all that, so I know from that day on I was saved." Also, going through with baptism, aside from being something God wishes for a believer to do, helps a person to look back and have a date, time and event they can point to as a moment when they chose to follow Jesus.

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your lord, having confessed your sins (at least to God) and believing that he died for your sins. Then your heart is changed and your life is new. You now love others, you don't want to sin, you pray to God, you desire to know more about God and how to live right (the Bible), and want to worship God. It's not enough to believe there is a God or know about Jesus, or to go to church -- any more than being in a garage makes you a car. :)

First you have to beleive in One God, that Jesus is the son of God and died for your sins. Then you have to strive to live your life in peace, to yourself and others, as Jesus taught.
If you beleive in the above and make the effort, you are a Christian.
