In prophase the chromosomes have condensed and can be seen under a microscope but have not aligned in the center of the cell. In metaphase the condensed chromosomes align in the center of the cell.

A cell in prophase can be recognized by looking at the nucleus. A prophase cell will not have a nucleoli and instead of being a somewhat solid shape, the nucleus will look spotty and you will be able to see white areas in the nucleus.

During very early prophase a big tip that the cell is no longer in interphase is that the nucleoli have disappeared and the nuclear material appears grainy.

During late prophase and begin to pull the chromosomes toward the equator of the cell.

Lateprophase is sometimes given a special name Prometaphase because of the two distinct events that happen then, namely, the disintegration of the nuclear membrane and, the attachment of the chromosomes to the spindle.

At metaphase the chromosomes are aligned across the centre of the cell; they are in their most condensed state, & are therefore most easily identified through a microscope at this stage.
