The vector (the way the illness is spread) is mainly through contaminated water. There are most likely other ways you can catch the bacteria, but contaminated water is where the index case starts.

The patient of cholera passes very large number of cholera bacteria in his feces. This may contaminate the water source, specially in rainy seasons. Flies also transmit the infection to the food of next host. Some times, the infection is transmitted by unhygienic cholera carriers to next victims. By consumption of such infected water and food, you get cholera.

I don't think you can still catch it these days, but I guess in very dirty, unsanitary situations,that's why people take baths, use there Lysol,fabreeze and so many other disinfectants.
