Leukemia is a blood disease that prevents the body from producing healthy red blood cells, usually by creating too many white blood cells. This leads to many health issues as the blood is unable to do its job properly.
There are various things known to cause leukemia. Exposure to ionizing radiation is one. Another is certain types of viruses. Certain chemicals, including benzene, can cause it, and so, it seems, can certain types of chemotherapy. There are certain petrochemicals known to have an effect on it. There is a link below to the section on causes in a Wikipedia article.
According to a study in 1961, leukemia causes death by hemorrhage, infection, gastric ulceration, or by miscellaneous causes, such as pulmonary edema.
