How can you go up in rank in the US Military?

Stand out from your peers, take as many skill level courses and correspondence courses as you can, avoid getting Article 15s and negative counseling statements, consistently pass your PT tests and marksmanship qualifications, prove yourself to be proficient at your job, look good and be able to answer questions during a promotion board, and - probably one of the big ones, even if it's not meant to be so - hope you're in an occupation which has a high enough turnover rate that opportunities for promotion will be open.
