keeping it in an air tight container will work the longest but if it gets dried out, take a clean paper towel, soak it with water (not dripping wet) and lay it on top of the dried out brown sugar and reseal the container. The sugar will absorb the moisture from the wet/damp paper towel and be good as new. Michelle from Newark

Another option if the sugar is already soft and you just want to keep it that way, is to put a piece of bread in with the sugar (it works even in original plastic bag). The moisture in the bread keeps the sugar soft and seems to work longer then a damp paper towel (in my opinion). The bread gets really hard and dried out and does not spoil.

White sugar must be kept totally dry in order to remain clump free, but if you have canned it yourself, don't use an oxygen absorber or the sugar will get hard that way too.

If the sugar is in clumps, you can take your clean, dry hand, and break them up, getting to the point where you can use a whisk to stir it up.

this is what i have been told i dont know if its accurate or not but give it a shot if your wanting to keep your suger soft you need to take bread and cut it up you put the cut up bread in the bag with the sugar and you seal it make sure the bag is sealed and you should have soft sugar
