I replaced the outside driver's door handle on my 1993 Camry today and tried to document the process as best I could. I am not an auto mechanic and do not even know the correct names for all the tools, but here's a link you can copy to the file, which is a Word document with pictures: members.aol.co…m. If you cannot get it this way, e-mail me and I will send it. Good luck! Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but had to say it: You are amazing !! The way you have described the whole process with pictures is terrific. My most sincere thanks and 'wow'!! to you on behalf of everyone who has benefitted from your tip. I found another trick to removing the trim around the inside door handle. The above article refers to putting a screwdriver UNDER the door handle and pushing down (that is pushing down the tip of the screwdriver) ... to release a "secret latch". That's the first step. The second step (which is not in the article) is to insert the scredriver ABOVE the door handle ... vertically above the spot in the article. Then gently press the screwdriver handle down. With the screwdriver acting as a lever, the tip of the screwdriver will push UP on the top part of the trim. That will lift the trim up off a small pin on the handle mechanism. With both the bottom and top of the trim piece now "unlatched", slide the trim toward the back of the car, while you open the inside door handle (as mentioned in the article). The trim will come right off. Be sure to slide the trim toward the back of the car, as you move the trim away from the door panel. (There is a "hooked" piece of plastic on the back of that trim that prevents you from just pulling it out perpendicular to the door panel.) 'Hope these fine points help. PS. My 1996 Camry had 2 screws on the bottom of the door that also were holding the interior door panel in place. ( Full Answer )
The handle probably "is" broken. They are known for this problem. The best I can offer is to take a small flashlight and look into the hole nearest the seat and look for a rod. Take some needlenose pliers and pull up (or down) on that rod and the door should pop open. Those handles are pretty cheap,… but you need a heavyduty Rivet gun to put a new one in. ( Full Answer )
if you pull on the handle but the door doesn't open: you have to order the clip that is attached from the handle to the door. it's only 5 bucks(maybe less) at the dealership. then you pull the door panel off and replace the rod with clip. it is probably your clip that is worn, not the rod. i replace…d the rod because i bent mine. How do you open a rear door on a 2001 Malibu when the child lock is engaged and the handle on the outside is broken?
If it's anything like the 1999, there should be a grommet on the frame that you can get to if you fold the seat down and pull the trim out of the way. It sits right in front of the child safety switch, giving you access.
The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You may want to go to a car parts store, or book store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.
This is a common fault in Chevy Astro, and reasonably easy to fix. I had to replace all in my 1988 and starting the process in my 1998. Chevy dealers stock these parts due to popularity. All you have to do is remove the inner door panel (you may want to also by a couple spare fasteners you break at …this feat). Handles just bolt in and connect to control rods. Joe ( Full Answer )
Answer . \nThe rear liftgate handle is made of cheap black plastic with a "finger" that depresses the latch which pulls a cable and opens the door.Opening the door when this finger breaks requires one to actually remove the plastic door trim while the door is shut from the inside of the van.The d…oor trim is secured using plastic pop rivets and there's at least 8 or 10 of them.Once the trim is removed, locate the cable that the latch pulls when depressed. This will open the door, and replacement of the defective part is pretty easy. The price tho' may not($75, most dealers, if available)and the new part is doomed to fail again. I am having the same problem. It looks as if I will need to find a total replacement for this problem due to the fact the whole door is made of plastic and the plastic has actually broke away from the holding clips.. I had to.
I have actually loosened the door panel and looked up in there and I wired the functioning pieces together, which worked for several months, but then one day it didn't. I checked on it and this cheap handle, with soft plastic parts (too fragile for my kids)was too expensive to replace (which is simp…le to do by studying the way it goes in; price I believe was over $40) I've decided to keep wiring mine up for months at the time, and may replace it when I sell. If you have zero skills in figuring mechanical things out, just go to the dealer and pay $100 or so.. Answer . Personally, I would ask the local police to see if they can open it with a SLIM JIM. Some body shops have these too. Good luck.. I actually had to replace the door handle on my 2002 Escape and you literally had to take the door apart to do it...found out the easiest thing to do was go to my nearest salvage yard, where I purchased the entire "guts" of a nearly-perfect door and replaced everything inside...took about a half-hour all together. Otherwise, replacing pieces one-at-a-time will drive you crazy. AND...it costs me a grand total of $25. ( Full Answer )
Answer . You'll have to remove the door panel in order to access the bolts holding it on. Not real difficult, just kind of a pain in the rear to do.

Have a 1993 Chevy G20 van backdoor lock-handle broken- cannot get it opened-can this be fixed- how or does the door have to be replaced?
Answer . Had the same problem with drivers door. I removed the door panel and was able to see screws that held the door handle on. I replaced the handle with one from the wreckers. It was not a big job but is tight working inside any door. You may be able to open the door with a screw driver p…ushed directly in the handle button hole. Don't drop anything in the door or it will have to stay there. My arm was too big to reach down and pick up anything I dropped. ( Full Answer )

How do you repair an exterior door handle on a 98 ford van econoline that won't actuate the latch if the handle is not broken off but just doesn't open the door?
Answer The rear door latch is actuated both from the inside and outside door handles via a cable for each of the handles. The failure is in the individual cable assembly which clips into keepers at both the latch and respective door handles. The failure lies in the plastic retainer/clip that goes …into metal retainers on the latch and the handles becomes brittle with time from deterioration from temperature variations. These cables should be replaced in pairs otherwise one will be taking the door apart again. While this is not impossible as a "do it yourself job" it is very difficult without a well illustrated manual to guide you as there are several door items which must be correctly removed to access the cables and the latch assembly which must be removed to attach the new cables. The repair begins with the door open (if possible) and removing the lower interior door panel which will provide access to four hex screws retaining the license plate holder/door handle assembly. (note: remove the license plate light lense from outside the vehicle before removing the assembly) Gently pull the license plate holder assembly outward and disconnect the rod to the lock and the electrical cable which has a connector (white) in the lower part of the door. If it has been impossible to open the door with either handle it will be necessary to release the latch by pushing on the release lever with a screw driver or other approprate tool. It is necessary to disconnect the rods to the electric door lock actuator if so equipped before removing the latch assembly. The latch assembly is held in place with three Torks type fasteners. Once the latch assembly is out install the new cables and re-assemble by reversing the removal procedures. ( Full Answer )
Just fixed my the easiest way. Remove bottom screw through existing round access hole. Cut a hole in the side of the door adjacent to the top screw. Make the slot big enough to get your finger and a wrench into it. Remove the top screw, disconnect the rod on the old door handle by pushing the tip wi…th a screwdriver, remove old handle. Install new handle. It is easier to pull the latch to open position to get it into the door and behind the long lock rod. use needle nose or screwdriver to align and push latch rod into latch BEHIND long lock rod. Put the nuts back on screws, tighten, test, latch. Viola. Patch new hole with metal plate or duct tape. ( Full Answer )
How do I open the drivers door on a 1968 El Camino when the latch is broken and I have already removed the door handle and inside door panel.?
Try to pull (or push) on the inside actuating rod that opened the door from inside. You may need an inspection mirror, good lighting, and skilled hands to access the specific latching lever(s). Don't be afraid to thread strong nylon-propylene string to get another pull-point on it. If the car is val…uable, you may have to cautiously saw some surrounding metal out (or drill access holes). Careful not to damage the safety-strength doing this. If you are successful, go to medical school to become a surgeon. ( Full Answer )

Take off the door panel. the plastic clip that holds the metal rod to the door handle came off or broke off. replace it.
You'll have to pull the cover off the inside of the door. This can be done by removing any screws, bolts that are holding it in place. Then you can get at the linkage and manually open the door. the above answer does not work. We do it by cutting the striked bolts off from the back side, in the pil…lar behind the door, this is a really common problem on hondas the latch brakes inside. we charge 400 on average to replace the latch and repair the striker plate we cut off. The most likely culprit is that the plastic retainer that holds the long metal rod that goes between the latch mechanism and the inside door handle has broken, and the rod is no longer connected. These plastic retainers are readily available at most auto parts stores. You'll need to remove the door …panel (including the "hidden" screws sometimes found behind plugs in the arm rest/ door pull), and locate which end of the metal rod is out of its place (usually its the end attached to the inside handle, but sometimes its the one attached to the latch). Attach the replacement retainer clip in the hole in the door handle (or door latch), insert the metal rod through the holes, and snap the retainer in place on the metal rod. Test your work, then reassemble the door panel. ( Full Answer )

I have a 2003 Sienna. Go to your owners manual and under replacing tail lights and stop lights you will find instructions on how to remove the back panel covering of the rear door/hatch. You need to get at the lock from the inside of the van. In my manual the info is on pages 317 and 318. To do thi…s you must remove the second and third row seats so you can get at the door. You can not open the rear hatch from the outside. In particular, you have to remove the overhead strap and the inside door handles by removing the screws. The screws are covered by plastic slip over faring. the strap faring slides off, the handle covers pop up as per page 317. You remove the handles/ straps. Of course ,these handle are now down near the floor with the door closed. Then you gently pull off the plastic inside door covering to expose the lock. You will see the cable that goes from the outside handle to the locking attachment. Just pull on the cable and the door will open. Once the door is open, just remove the entire mechanism and take it to Toyota parts department and as soon as they see it, they will tell you they have a replacement unit. Buy the whole unit. Mine cost about 35.00. The plastic part is doesn't glue well. I tried it and then some. Note: the inside door covering is held to the door frame with white plastic snap in plugs, these plugs sometimes fall out of the covering when trying to replace the cover after putting in a new latch assembly. Line up all the white plugs in their slots then match them to the holes in the door frame and gently push them back in. If they are out of line the cover will not snap back in evenly. Check the floor of your workplace before you do this, one may have fallen on the ground, then you need to remove the cover again to put one plug back in. Good Luck..Will26c@juno.com ( Full Answer )

Why if the door was on child safety and the door wont open how would you openfix broken door handle?
If I understand the question correctly - - the door is on child safety lock and you can't open the door to fix the handle. If so - - you will have to remove the interior door panel to gain access to the locking mechanism and unlock it manually. Mechanical methods of opening the door (Slim Jim's, etc…) stand a good chance of damaging the locking mechanism by forcing it, and you (or someone) will have to remove the door panel to repair it anyway. The same instructions go along with the pictures here - http://www.ehow.com/how_5105535_replace-toyota-corolla-door-handle.html . PLEASE GO TO THE ABOVE ARTICLE AS I TOOK A LOT OF TIME TO POST THE PICTURES AND THEY ARE VERY HELPFUL. Thanks. And please rate it 5 stars if you found it useful, which …I'm sure you will. . Replace / Fix A Toyota Corolla Door Handle (98-02). First line of business - remove the door panel. The most obvious first screw is right above the interior handle.. Pull off the arm rest. Get some leverage under one side and just pull. You can use the flat head screwdriver to push in some of the pins inside to pull it out more easily but just a good little bit of force should do the trick. Unscrew the two newly revealed screws underneath.. To remove the window crank (if applicable) push the washer back toward the panel while pulling the crank toward yourself to expose the metal safety clip. Pry out the safety clip with the flat head screwdriver and the crank will come off. (Don't be shy about using as much force as necessary with the clip as it is made of malleable metal you can easily bend back if it's bent out too far). Remove the door panel by prying it off screw by screw. A little force is necessary but not enough to break the plastic. Pull the door panel off but leave the interior handle hanging there on the door itself as it does not come off with the panel.. Pull the plastic seal off. This may be a bit sticky, and don't remove more of it than you need as you will later need to re-seal this.. Unscrew the three screws from the inside of the broken handle with the 10mm socket and wrench. Don't drop the screws inside the door, as there is a chance you may lose them in the pocket of oblivion to the right. If you do, you can get them out with a good magnet or just buy some new ones. (they're about 40 cents at a hardware store). Remove the old handle by pushing it out from the door and undoing it from the metal door handle rod. (for the handle pictured, you will have to squeeze the one side of the bright green piece and push out through the other.). Take off the old handle but leave the gold colored locking mechanism in place like so.. Install the new handle in the same manner you took off the old handle. Finagle it in left to right around the bulky top end and the existing lock. Slide the lock through the hole in the handle designated for it. Once that snaps in you're ready to put the panel back together, so work backward from step 7. ( Full Answer )
First step is to get inside the door - See "Related Questions" below for details on removing the door panel. A couple of nuts to release the exterior handle, a linkage connection, and swap over the key cylinder. Piece of cake and you'll be done in only 7 or 8 hours... Oh wait, not quite that l…ong - hour or so. ;) NOTE: Please consider coming back and adding your experience to this question - any tricks or traps that will make it easier for the next person. How do you open rear door on 1998 Honda accord when outside handle is broken and childproof lock is engaged?
Take off inside door panel. Here is a video link that shows how. Even with the back door closed you can remove the door panel. You do not have to remove the back seat. You just really need to pull hard on the door panel. After you remove the door panel, use a small screwdriver to push up on the chil…d lock switch. Then you should be able to pull on the rod and open the door. You should replace the outside door handle while you have the door panel off. if the door opens from the outside but not the inside then check that the door does not have a child lock
You have to take the inside handle apart to activate the latch manually. If you can't do it from the handle area you have to remove the inside door panel.
Many individual never thought of the work our garage door does - lifting and closing a large door every day, over and over again.. The fact is, your garage door opener really doesn't do much work, because of a physics helper, the spring! Springs are utilized as the door is lowered, and the springs a…re stretched out (the motor literally pushes the garage door down). When it is time to lift the door, the springs do 95% of the work as they recoil and pull the door back up, leaving the garage door motor to do little more than wind up the loose cable or chain. This is why most garage door openers are rated at only 1/2 to 1 horse power - it doesn't take much power to lift up a garage door that is being pulled up by stretched springs. ( Full Answer )

I just had this problem with my car (Nissan Sentra). What I did was take the door panel off from the passenger side door to see how the door handle worked and the set up. On my car the door handle has a cable that hooks to the lock assembly. When you pull the door handle the cable pulls up on the lo…ck assembly lever then the door opens. So after taking a good look at the passenger side I was able to get an idea to where I had to pull up on the lock assembly lever on the driver side. I used a hanger to pull up on the lock assembly lever and finally got my door open. Then took the door panel off the driver side to check and fix the problem. Hope this can help you. ( Full Answer )
Open the door. Remove the 12 screws inside the door around the perimeter. The front of the door will separate from the back- be careful to not let them spring apart. You may want to disconnect the black plastic control panel wire harnesses inside the door so you don't risk damaging any wires. Affixi…ng the handle to the door is two 3/8 hex heads. Remove both screws. My handle felt loose because there is a Allen head screw inside the handle post that was loose. Needs to be tightened through the 3/8 hex thread hole with a small SAE Allen size. Just replace it with another door handle. This is easier since you don't have to take the time to fix it.
It may be possible to reach and manipulate the door opening mechanism with the right kind of wrench, but you would have to examine the broken handle to see if internal mechanisms can be reached. Failing that, it could be necessary to cut away some of the door to get at the internal mechanism. A ca…r repair company would probably advise you to just install a new door. ( Full Answer )
