You must have a bachelors degree and complete a teacher certification program, which includes a student-teaching component. You also need to pass a few standardized exams as well, which are known as the Praxis exams. You need to pass the Praxis I exam, which is like an easy version of the SAT, and the Praxis II, which is content-based for the area you wish to teach. I teach social studies, so I had to pass the social studies Praxis II exam. Some folks have to take more than one Praxis II in order to become certified. If you successfully pass the exams, achieve a passing grade in student teaching, graduate and receive your bachelors degree, and can obtain the FBI, Child Abuse, and PA State clearances needed (which requires you to have a clean background) you can apply for your teaching certificate from the state. Hope this helps.
