I have a guinea pig that's very skittish and i can pick him up without scaring him by making sure he sees my hand before i touch him. I pet his back and then once you can pet him without him moving just stick you hand under his stomach and pick him up.

If you change a guinea pig's cage every week and a half will it attract maggots?

No, I do not think so. It would have to be really, really dirty before it attracted anything. If housed in an appropriate sized cage, and if there is only one guinea pig, many guinea pigs can go two weeks without needing a cage cleaning. But this depends on the guinea pig. Some are very dirty and require alot more cleaning. Princess-jen says: Hi there. As i have a guinea pig myself i never leave a cage a week and a half. (mine is inside in a medium cage) i change newspaper and hay every two day etc... It would probably have to be very dirty as the other user has said. But i still wouldn't leave it for that long anyway because of infections guineapigs can pick up off the floor as they are low riders. Cheers have fun with your guineapig.

How do you help your guinea pig become less timid?

The biggest impression you can make on your guinea pig I would think for sure would be when they are young. After that you can only do so much. But make sure that you try to never startle your guinea pig (running by it's cage or grabbing it suddenly etc.) and you can give him/her treats from your hand to help him/her understand that your not going to hurt them. Make sure that you take them out often and when you are picking them up try to stroke them first and not pick them up all of a sudden.

How do you get a guinea out of their cage?

open the cage door and grab the guinea pig...its that easy I wouldn't grab them because they are small and can be quite fragile. If they will not come when you call you should either gently pick them up and out or tempt them out with food.

If my guinea pig has mites being treated but bites and doesn't let me pick him up so I can clean his cage how or what can I do to clean his cage?

Then, you have to hand tame your guinea pig. You have to take him out of his cage to clean it, and he has to get treated for mite or he will die. So you have to just take him out and play with him all the time.

When adult guinea pigs have baby guinea pigs do you touch them straight away?

No, you should not touch them right away. Wait for a few days (a week or so) and let them get use to their cage and their parents. Then pick them up.

Is there anything you can do to reassure timid guinea pigs when trying to pick them up?

Mine does this too. Mine runs away from me so not hard but pick it up and support the butt and lightly push against the cage. It works for me.
