There is a vaccine for some forms of bacterial pneumonia. The vaccine doesn't protect against some forms of viral pneumonia, or the pneumonia that is put upon those with a low immunity system. By the way I'm twelve and i have pneumonia and i know all of this because i read. I'm not a computer freak, I just want to help.

Preventing the flu is important also, because it can lead to pneumonia as a secondary infection because your resistance is low. Also, DON'T SMOKE, especially if you have a respiratory infection.

Get a pneumonia shot. I got mine almost 5 years ago and have never gotten pneumonia again. Also, practice strict hygeine. Wash you hands all day. Keep your house clean and avoid touching the bottom of your shoes. I got bactgerial pneumonia from mouse droppings not realizing they were in my garage. Viral pneumonia can be avoided with the shot and the strict hygiene controls too. If you get an URI take good care of it and don't avoid doctors if you are getting worse with a URI.

Avoid crowded situations like the Emergency Room waiting room also help. There are also vaccines you can take. Get the flu vaccine. Even though influenza is a viral infection, it can weaken your immune response to a point that result in a secondary bacterial infections.

The pneumonia vaccine is a safe and effective way to lower your risk of developing complicated pneumonias. However, it does not protect against simple coughs and colds, which requires the flu vaccine. The pneumonia vaccine usually needs a booster in a few years time, though the flu vaccine is given annually.
