Some web server applications are extremely easy to configure (such as Cherokee) while others will make you tear your hair out (Caudium). As such, no single question can really tell you in detail how to set up a server. The very basic procedure is this:
1. Choose a platform to run it on (such as Windows and Linux).
2. Choose a web server application to run your web site (IIS doesn't run on Linux, for instance).
3. Install the web server
4. Edit the configuration file to adjust things like port number, rewrite rules, proxying, and CGI (this is the most difficult step).
5. Place your web site in the root of the web server (where the web server looks for files). This will be something like C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\htdocs on Windows or /var/www/ on Linux by default. You can usually change this in the configuration file.
