METHOD OF PURIFYING SEWAGEIt involves the following two processes:
  • Removal of solids by physical screeings and sedimentation
  • Removal of soluble and fine suspended organic pollutants by a biological oxidation process, using active sludge/sediment .
  • Then ultra violet rays are applied to produce pre drinking water. i.e. Water that is safe enough to water Golf courses.
  • The final process to make water safe as drinking water again, chlorine is then added to produce water that is safe to drink.

From an engineer: All organic material (poop) is "eaten" by microorganisms, leaving only minerals. Sewage treatment simply speeds the process. It is similar to burning, which leaves only ash (mineral). Note: the final step in sewage treatment is chlorination, which means essentially you could drink the liquid coming out of a sewage treatment plant and not get sick!! Yuk!

Disadvantages: Its costly, the plant requires lots of energy to operate and critics believe this will result in an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, Advantages: It guarantees that in a drought there is always clean water, improves fish habitat, Desalination plants are the size of a warehouse and will be situated in an area close to other industrial facilities and away from large residential areas, Each day the plant can supply up to 500 million litres of water regardless of rainfall^^^^^^^^^here are some pros and cons of recycling sewage water^^^^^^^^^

The process that sewage goes through at a sewage treatment facility includes pretreatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment, tertiary treatment, disinfection, and odor control. The pre-treatment includes removing grit, equalizing the flow of the sewage and removing fat at grease. Primary treatment the sludge settles to the bottom of large pre-setting basins, and grease and oil gets removed as it floats to the surface. Secondary treatment includes fixed-film systems, suspended-growth systems, roughing filters. There are surface-aerated basins, filter beds, constructed wetlands, biological aerated filters, rotating biological contactors, membrane bioreactors, and secondary sedimentation. Tertiary treatment also includes filtration, lagooning, and nutrient removal.

Clean water made from sewage is the result of the water running through a cleansing process. The water is filtered quite a few times before it is released as clean water.
