I'm not an expert or anything, but I used to have two gerbils and when one of them died, the other didn't do or eat much, and tended to sit in the same place for ages without moving and refused to come out of the cage. I think he was sad and unhappy :(

I can't say a normal weight is ____grams because you might have a large gerbil or a small one. Generally it is an appearance if your gerbil has a pot belly he's probably a bit overweight but being underweight can also be a serious problem with rodents in general. If the worst happens and your gerbil gets a cold or just isn't quite feeling well they can drop weight at an alarming rate.

If he or she is alone in a corner of the cage he or she might not be feeling well check he or she's teeth look around for diarrhea if you find some take him or her to the vet. Also he or she has a red nose he or she might be allergic to his or her bedding I recommend care fresh or care fresh ultra also he or she might has an infection if you changed the bedding and it does not clear up take he or she to the vet.

Guinea pigs popcorn which means they are happy and only healthy guinea pigs popcorn. You can tell that they are pop-corning by watching them instantly spring into the air and run really fast around their cage while squealing with joy. (for more information call your veterinarian and ask questions)

Check the eyes and make sure they are bright and healthy. Check for bite marks and if fur is fluffy. Buy from a breeder and not a pet store. Make sure there is no mucus in eyes or nose.

You can tell when a gerbil is sick because it will sneeze, have a runny nose, be lethargic, or have diarrhoea.

They look fat. If they appear to be pregnant and you know they aren't (especially if it's a guy), then they are too fat. If they look like they have eaten a pear whole that is a sign, too.
