Take the valve cover off of one bank of cylinders, have someone turn the engine over, and watch to see if the cam is turning. If not, the timing chain or belt is broken.
One way to tell if the timing chain is broken on your Nissan Altima is to see if it will start. If it starts, it is not the timing chain. You can also remove the distributor cap, have someone step on the gas while you watch the engine. If the rotor moves, it is not the timing chain.
car wont run if the belt is broken ! Run a compression test.
Run a compression test. If compression in all cylinders is low, it's probably the timing chain.
Remove distributor cap Have assistant crank engine See if rotor moves while engine cranking
I am almost certain that the timing chain should last throught the life of the Explorer.
Highly doubtful, the engine has a timing chain and the ignition relies on a crank sensor for timing. But if the chain did jump you could probably tell by doing a compression test.
It uses a timing chain
You can tell a timing chain is bad when your engine makes a sharp washboard-like sound that increases in intensity when the engine's RPMs increase.
You have to jack the motor up and remove the motor mount on the side of the motor and remove the timing chain cover wich is held on by seventeen 10mm bolts. I will tell you the timing chain kit will run you around 225.00 but if it has slipt or broke your gona have to have the head checked to see if you bent any valves
The chain will become noisy and you may experience poor performance.
Do you mean how to tell if it is broken?
Timing chains rotate, much like that of a bicycle. It would make a loud clanking sound. Now it may have "jumped" off its position or may be worn out. or get a compression test, plus you'll know the car won't start likely it's the timing chain causing it.
