One would assume that you were prescribed the contact lens to aid your level of vision for a particular eye, so to check if you still have a lens in, maybe you should "test" your vision by covering the other eye to find out if you can see clearly out of the eye in question. If not, chances are, there's no lens present.
You can tell you need glasses when you can't see things as clear as you used to. I was in the same situation as you and thankfully there are many websites with cheap contact lenses. The website I use and I find them to be very affordable is www.contactsamerica.com. I would suggest looking into different ones and if you have eye insurance some may cover them.
