Enlarged nipples, bloated stomach, difference in behaviour (I.E: Larger appetite, 'nest making', defensive) are the usual signs of a pregnant dog. When the bitch is giving birth, she'll most likely display signs of discomfort; turning in circles, sighing, digging in her bed, seemingly unable to get comfortable.

There are usually baby dogs after something like that. Check the laundry room, they might be hiding out there.

I only wanted to have one litter of gerbils but ive been reading that the father needs to help care for them when should you take the father out of the cage?

The father can help care for them, as it relieves a lot of stress from the mom. However, if you only want one litter, you will need to separate them before the birth. Gerbils mate right after birth, and this is the female's most fertile time. The best way to have minimal litters is to have one litter that mom can raise, and then before the next litter comes, remove father and leave on of the older daughters in the tank with her. The daughter will help mom raise the litter. Place a son in dad's tank so that he does not get lonely.
