A way to tell is by the sound the motor makes. If it is winding slowly with no force it could be going out. If it skips or whines without action it is out.

you probably have a bind the burning smell is probably the wire going to your starter you need to find out what it is, try tightening the starter then replace if need be

Its going to be the same way you can tell if any other motor is going out. Parts start breaking what seems to be at the same time. Or maybe you can hear a knock or tapping.
