Here is one way to tell time by the sun. In most places the sun rises around 6 a.m. and sets around 6 p.m. That means the halfway point between where the sun rises and sets will be noon. You can assume the time it takes for the sun to travel the sky from horizon to horizon will be about 12 hours. That's about half of the 24 hour trip around the earth. Think of the sky as a new kind of watch by divided the sky into 12 increments, and directly overhead will be noon. You know that since the sun rises in the East and sets in the West that from overhead to the East is morning and overhead to the West is afternoon. For a lot of people the width of their hand at arms length will be about one hour on our sky-watch. You can hold out your arm and measure the number of hand-widths from the horizon to the sun, and with a little easy math come up with the time. An example would be, three hands from the Eastern horizon would be about 9 A.M. Two hands from the Western horizon would be about 4 P.M.

Remember the sun is on "sun time" not Standard time or Daylight Savings time. Also, depending on where you are in your time zone, your guess can be up to an hour "slow" against clock time.

Practice the steps provided when you've got a watch to check your results. Never hesitate to toss in a "getting towards ..." or an "almost ..."

This method assumes you live in the northern hemisphere north of the Tropic of Cancer and can find due north or south by yourself with a compass, magnet or by looking at the stars.

Basic Facts:

* The sun is always due south of you at noon. * If you face due south the sun is at your left at 6 am and your right at 6pm. * Even though you can't see it, it is right behind you at midnight. How to tell time:

* Point at the sun without moving from your "looking south" position * If you are pointing to the left, right or straight ahead it is 6 am, 6 pm, or noon * Between these points the hours are estimated at 1/3s of the distance between 6am and noon or noon and 6 pm. * If you have to point behind you it is summer and the sun rises and sets to the north of the east/west line. The 1/3 of the distance between the east and north or west and north instruction works for the hours in this case just as well.

From the June solstice until the December solstice, each day's sunrise and sunset are a little further south compared to the previous day. Each sunrise appears a little to the right along the eastern horizon compared to the day before, and the sun sets a little more to the left each day along the western horizon. From the December solstice until the June solstice the opposite is true; each day's sunrise and sunset appear a little further north compared to the previous day.
