In general, the puberty and the menstrual cycle are genetically and hormonally determined and different girls can have different development. In different countries periods are starting at 11 -17 (depending on physical development, hormones, genetics, country location, etc). It is very personal and pre-menstrual "signals" (strange discharges, breast tense, abdomen pain, etc.) can come 1-2 days or 2-3 months or 11-12 months in advance. Some girls don't have any pre-menstruation "signals". It depends how sensitive are you and how fast your hormones will jump up. Just don't be stressed because stress itself could make a delay. Everything has it's time. If you would not have your cycle up to 17 - better visit your doctor.
First period usually occurs about two years after your breasts develop and between 4 and 6 months after the growth of your pubic and underarm hair. Discover more in recommended related link.
you might feel your stomach cramp up and sometimes you won't even know it till you go to the bathroom. you will see dischage in your knickers this can be brown white and yellow the age people usually start are between 13-15 but this is not for everybody you can start when your 9-17 so everybody is different.
It varies for everyone though. If you are 17+ and still havent had your first period you should see your doctor. There are several things that may happen. You may feel a back ache, little cramps for a week or two, brownish discharges, mood changes, feeling like you want to cry, and a sharp pain in your side. You can help yourself if you have any of this by staying away from sugar, caffeine, and processed foods. Don't drink sodas and take it easy on candy. Get plenty of sleep. If you have bad cramps when you finally start your period you do what I said above plus take some aspirin, drink some hot tea, and put a heating pad on your back to help with the cramps. If you think you are going to start make a small kit to carry with you that has Kotex or a pantie liner in it. Do NOT use a tampon when you first start. Tampons are dangerous for young girls to use and many often do not change them often enough which results in infection. Do NOT wear a tampon if you are not on a period. I know some girls are doing this and this is not good because of the infections. Bacteria builds up and can actually kill you.
There Are Many Different symptoms for different women.

For your first period you should get a bit of brown discharge a few days before or the day that you are going to get it. You will find a small amount of blood in your undies, but don't worry it won't be a huge gush of blood that will go everywhere, it will usually happen overnight and no it is not painful and you usually can't feel it.
Well for your first time there's really no "sign." When you see blood you'll know, but i dont think you'll notice any signs prior to that for the first one
usually you'll notice major cramps around your crotch and it can hurt to excirsize
